My top 3 upcoming Switch exclusive games in 2018

I don’t know how you feel about the Nintendo Switch. For me the Nintendo Switch is a console which is unique and different. If you put all three big players on the table (XBox One, PS4 and the Nintendo Switch) I would definitely grab the Switch without an eye twink. The concept is modern, new, unused and something totally different. Don’t get me wrong, I’m also owning a Playstation 4 for the fantastic exclusives and AAA games, but the Switch has something magical which the XBox One nor the Playstation 4 can deliver.

With that being said, I personally feel that the games coming out for the Nintendo Switch this year are fantastic. There are some great multi platform titles like Dark Souls Remastered or Valkyria Chronicles 4 that I’m exciting to see running on the Switch, but this article is all about the exclusives. The following three exclusive Nintendo Switch titles are the titles I’m mostly looking forward to in 2018:

Kirby Star Allies

I admit, I’m a huge Kirby fan. At least when it comes down to the side scrolling Jump ‘n Run games. For example the latest 3DS title Kirby: Planet Robobot, which I’ve reviewed recently, is a fantastic, old school Kirby Jump ‘n Run. But what about to expect for Kirby Star Allies?

Kirby Star Allies basically reminds me of Kirby Planet Robobot and Kirby Triple Deluxe which both were released for the 3DS and 2DS. Both games are the classical Jump ‘n Run type of a Kirby game. This is already enough for me to take at least a deeper look at these games.

While Kirby Planet Robobot and Kirby Triple Deluxe are more or less the same (expect from some smaller differences like the abilities that you can use and the story of course), Kirby Star Allies brings a lot more mechanics into the series. Especially the possible four player coop looks pretty amazing to me. Besides this you can now combine the power of different abilities if you’re playing with another human player. If you don’t have another human player on your side you can also “influence” computer enemies to help you. If you have enough enemies “influenced”, you can make a “Kirby train” and just steam roll the enemies. If this doesn’t sound like a new fun way to play a Kirby game?!

It looks like that Kirby Star Allies isn’t reinvenitng itself but it is giving us more of the same, with new abilities, features and offline coop up to 4 players. I’m pretty sure that the addition of a coop feature does boost the game in sales and popularity. By the way, if you like old school 2D Jump ‘n Run type of games, the initial for the Wii U released Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze is going to be released for the Nintendo Switch on the 4th of May.

Kirby Star Allies will be released on the 16th of March. You can preorder the game on Amazon.

Fire Emblem

A new Fire Emblem game has been announced for the Nintendo Switch this year. Right now there is no real information available about it. But what can we expect from a series that was a exclusive titles for the Nintendo DS systems and is now coming to the Switch?

Well, something we can basically sure about is that the upcoming Fire Emblem title for the Nintendo Switch is going to be a “full” Fire Emblem title. While the 2017 released Fire Emblem Warrios was a Fire Emblem in a Dynasty Warriors Hack ‘n Slash costume, the new Fire Emblem is going to be a Fire Emblem like on the Nintendo 3DS systems, with an tactical board, a good story and so on. I never really was a fan of Fire Emblem Warrios. For me it was way too fast, coming with a game mechanic that is way too simply and repetitive. The real Fire Emblem games however are fantastic. You have to dive deep into the tactics and strategy these games are giving to you in order to get the best out of your characters. Besides this, the already mentioned story constantly motivates you to go on with the game. It has always been hard for me to put Fire Emblem titles like Awakening or Shadows of Valentia down before finishing them.

With the upcoming Fire Emblem title for the Switch I wish that this is going to happen again. A good, well written story and a fantastic strategical and tactical gameplay are needed to get the next Fire Emblem title to be a successful one. I’m pretty confident that this going to happen.

Yoshi (working title)

The new working title Yoshi will be all about the green dinosaur again. Nintendo released a first trailer for the E3 in 2017, where we can see a art-style like in the previous Yoshi’s Woolly World, which has been released for the Wii U in 2015.

Besides the art-style, it’s going to be a classic Yoshi 2D Jump ‘n Run were you will be able to switch between fore- and background in given circumstances. This mechanic is already known from the latest Kirby titles on the Nintendo 3DS and from the latest Donkey Kong titles on Wii U and 3DS. It gives 2D sidescrollers a complete new feeling. They basically hold up the old, beloved mechanic but adding a little bit more depth due to the additional areas where you can go to. I love this idea and hope to see this in a lot of more 2D sidescrollers in the near future.

Besides Kirby Star Allies, Yoshi comes with couch coop, too. To be honest, there is nothing better than having some friends over your place and you can instantly start playing with them some offline couch coop games. Maybe I’m a little bit old school here, but I really wish that a lot of more games are offering offline couch coop (not just Nintendo but also XBox One and Playstation 4 exclusives).

However, I’m pretty confident that the upcoming Yoshi title will get positively feedback up by younger and older players. The art-style isn’t for everyone. I know that a lot of people are loving the new Yoshi art-style, which was introduced with Yoshis Woolly World, but I would love to see a more classic art-style like in the good old Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. But the art-style will not stop me from preordering this title  😉

Wait, why didn’t you mentioned title XYZ?

So this three titles are (as already mentioned) my top three titles I’m personally looking forward to on the Nintendo Switch in 2018. I know that there are a lot of other great titles like Metroid coming up but for me, these three titles are instant buys.

Besides new games, Nintendo just recently announced Nintendo Labo for the Switch. This looks like a interesting but again unique and innovative way of playing with the NIntendo Switch. I’m very excited and interested in seeing how this will perform 🙂

If you didn’t bought yourself a Nintendo Switch, then maybe this is the right time to do so. You can buy yourself the Nintendo Switch on Amazon.
