League of Legends back on WINE

Since several patches, League of Legends does not work with WINE anymore or better I say, League of Legends does not work acceptable with WINE anymore. If you look at the FPS while playing you will see a maximum of 15 FPS at all.

Since yesterday I have a solutions found for that. I am a active board member of the ACE Client and a disscussion someone wrote, that we just have to set the WINE version to “Windows 7” and make some overrides for some DLLs.
Well, the DLLs always crashing the game for me, but the “WINE Windows 7 Version” hint gave me an awesome FPS boost from 15 to 40 FPS at all! In Teamfights it can drop down to 20-30 FPS.

So, what do you have to do now, to get League of Legends working with WINE again? Here are the steps you have to take:
1. Just simply install the game (best option here is to make fresh installation).
2. Install with winetricks the following requirements: d3dx9, vcrun2005
3. Navigate in a terminal to your League of Legends install directory and then switch to the subdirectorys rads/system (for example /home/$USER/.wine/drive_c/Riot Games/League of Legends/rads/system/).
4. Now, just use the following command to start the League of Legends launcher (please don’t forget to set the WINEPREFIX for League of Legends if you have one): wine “rads_user_kernel.exe” run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

That’s it! The game should be working now, with an acceptable framerate! Tested under openSUSE 12.1 with WINE 1.3.35 and 1.3.36!

I’m actually thinking about to make a script for PlayOnLinux to bring you the easiest possible install and usage for League of Legends with WINE, but actually I have to learn their syntax 🙂

  1. Hi, Thank you for this guide! I’m trying this now and I hope it will work for me. I have a couple questions:

    What do you mean by
” (please don’t forget to set the WINEPREFIX for League of Legends if you have one):”

Also, is this one command or two? If it is one command then is it in perfect form? Is that all I have to enter, exactly as listed here?
    wine „rads_user_kernel.exe“ run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe”

    Thanks again!

    1. Hi Hayg,

WINEPREFIX is only needed, when you’re using multiple virtual WINE prefixes, for e. g. you have two games and because of their dependencies you don’t want to use only one prefix, so that they don’t bite each other. WINEPREFIX has to be always at the front of a WINE command. But it looks like for me, that you don’t have a own prefix for League of Legends right now …

Yes, it is only one command. But, as I mentioned in the HowTo, you have to navigate in the terminal to the right directory. After you’ve done that, just use the command and you’re ready to go!

      Greetings

      1. and how can i navigate exactly? i need help by 3 and 4
is there any video or command i have tu use?

      2. Navigate into a directory in a console is possible with ‘cd’ (‘cd’ is the command you need).

These are basic knowledge while working with the bash. Fore more informations enter in a console ‘man cd’.

      3. Im getting this issue when i launch it.

        wine: cannot find L”C:\\windows\\system32\\\201crads_user_kernel.exe\201d”

        any ideas?

      4. Regarding: wine: cannot find L”C:\\windows\\system32\\\201crads_user_kernel.exe\201d” If you are getting that error, take the quotes around rads_user_kernel.exe out of the command you’re entering.

This is what you need to enter and the launcher should pop up in a few seconds:

        wine rads_user_kernel.exe run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

  2. I use Wine 1.4-rc1 (on Debian) and the luncher crashes with these messages:

    [~/.wine/drive_c/Riot Games/League of Legends/rads/system]$ wine “rads_user_kernel.exe” run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

    Clean installation, clean .wine directory.
    Any ideas?

    1. The problem was ls command and its text coloring feature. LOL 🙂

      This command solves the problem:

      wine “rads_user_kernel.exe” run lol_launcher $(ls –color=no ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

      1. I have same problem, but the -color=no don’t solve my problem. I use Ubuntu, so I use here –color=never, but this don’t help for me.

        Any ideas?

    2. help me plz >< i installed LoL and try to start it but have that lug like you.
I have Wine 1.4-rc6 with dx3d9-43, Adobe air, vcrun2005, microsoft core front, msvcr80, wininet… Your color don't help me =(

      1. oh my god i start it >< it was my failture, I write:
        ~/.wine/drive_c/Riot_Games/League_of_Legends/RADS/system$ wine rads_user_kernel.exe run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

and he said another error like i writed but even with these:
err:module:import_dll Library d3dx9_39.dll (which is needed by L"C:\\Riot_Games\\League_of_Legends\\RADS\\projects\\lol_launcher\\releases\.0.0.21\\deploy\\LoLLauncher.exe") not found

I install it from winetrics and LoL starts and update now ^^

  3. “3. Navigate in a terminal to your League of Legends install directory and then switch to the subdirectorys rads/system (for example /home/$USER/.wine/drive_c/Riot Games/League of Legends/rads/system/).”

    Don’t know what you meant.

    1. As I mentioned before by another comment, you have to use the command “cd” to navigate to the directory. For example: cd /home/$USER/foo

  4. Hi, you write “just simply fresh install the game”.

How do i do that? The Leagueoflegends.exe downloaded from their hp just crashes. Is there a way to download just the whole install-media or how do you do that?

    1. I have a copy of the full installer on my home server. If you just have the installer from the League of Legends web page, you should download it with a windows copy …

    2. I was confused by this for a while.

LeagueOfLegends.exe is just a rebranded Pando Media Booster installer + lol client pando download script fetcher. I tried for a little while but couldn’t get it to work.

Run LeagueOfLegends.exe on a Windows box. After the download completes and the installation starts, cancel the download, but keep the LeagueOfLegends installer files that it downloaded. These are the *real* installer files, and will work under WINE.

I don’t think there is a more direct way to download those files anymore. There used to be, a long while back, but it seems like that method has been removed.

If you’re really desperate you could try getting the LoL client some other way. There are boxed retail copies of the game, for example. You could get a used copy here for $22:

      http://www.amazon.com/League-Legends-Pc/dp/B002HOIPCW/

  5. Hello,
I’ve a little problem to run league of legends on ubuntu 10.04, when i type in terminal (/.wine/drive_c/Riot Games/League of Legends/rads/system) :
    wine “rads_user_kernel.exe” run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

    terminal returns :
    wine: cannot find L”C:\\windows\\system32\\\201crads_user_kernel.exe\201d”

    i don’t understand, and i think it means “201c rads_user… ” but there is a mistake…

could you help me please 🙂

    1. For me it looks like, than you aren’t in the right directory where your League of Legends is installed. Did you use “cd” to get to the right directory?

    2. im getting tge exact same error message from terminal. I am sure I navigated to the corrext directory like you instruction? please help me?

      1. first go to directory:
        cd /home/YOU/.wine/drive_c/Riot_Games/League_of_Legends/RADS/system

        then u’ll have this:
        YOU:~/.wine/drive_c/Riot_Games/League_of_Legends/RADS/system$

        write:
        wine rads_user_kernel.exe run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) lol.launcher.exe

..or what is your louncher name.

  6. Please make a playonlinux script. I am not skilled in Linux and that would make it allot easier 🙂

    1. Plus a great cummity will join in if you do make a script. Thanks for helping us linux users to satisfy our addiction to LoL !! thumbs up.

    2. The instructions shouldn’t be too bad, except the fact that you have to point at existing installer media rather than allowing PlayOnLinux to download LoL for you (since the LeagueOfLegends.exe you download off the net won’t work under WINE).

      http://www.playonlinux.com/en/dev-documentation-1.html

If we could figure out some way to get LeagueOfLegends.exe to work then we could make a super-ultimate-easy installer.

There are some slightly promising ideas on this thread: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22152

When I tried, though (with the GC_DONT_GC=1 flag – would just hang with no error if I didn’t), I got some sort of error about an unsupported OS. Maybe this is because I ran a lot of winetricks scripts first, though, including a win2k one, ala this tread: http://euw.leagueoflegends.com/board/showthread.php?t=65764 – those might not actually be necessary, and maybe you just need the GC_DONT_GC=1 setting from that first thread?

I’m kind of wondering if I tried again on a cleaner install if the downloader would work. If you’re trying it out, first try just following the instructions on the WINE thread first, not the LoL forum thread.

If you end up making the script simply point at Setup.exe and doesn’t download, I’d recommend you also support pointing at a retail boxed copy. I don’t have one so I can’t tell you its format, though I have a friend who has it and I might bug them.

    3. I actually just got the downloading installer (off their website) to work via:

export WINEPREFIX=(whatever the correct dir is for you)
winetricks -> pick default -> delete prefix and everything under it -> then exit

winetricks gecko (still installed – installs in a non-prefix directory now, pretty sure. Follow the instructions at the prompt)
      winetricks d3dx9
      winetricks vcrun2005
      winetricks vcrun2008
      winetricks wininet

      GC_DONT_GC=1 wine LeagueOfLegends.exe

The problem I was having before (unsupported Windows version) was because my wine Windows version was set to win2k, due to some bogus instructions on the LoL forums having me set win2k via winetricks…

If this doesn’t work for you, you can supposedly the client installer more directly at:
      http://www.fileplanet.com/111621/0/0/0/1/section/Game_Clients

  10. Hello

I got the game running and created a shell script to launch my game instead of having to type all the commands all the time. But the problem is that lol runs at 40-50 fps for the first 15minutes and as the game progresses its goes lower and lower until I end up with frame rates between 5-15? Is this caused by some kind of memory leak? Is there a fix for this issue? I have tried many different NVIDIA drivers and they all offer exatly the same problem.

  11. First, set your WINE version to “Windows 7”, this will give you a much better FPS!

The biggest problems actually is, that the FPS is in some cases to low. I have played a little bit with the graphical settings and found out for myself, that I can get a stable 25-40 FPS Rate, if I’m using the following settings:

    Character Quality: High
    Enviroment Quality: High
    Effects Quality: Low
    Wait for Vertical Sync: disabled
    Shadows: Off
    Frame Rate Cap: High

So, for me the major issue are the effects right now. I can set everything to whatever I want, it doesn’t really affect on the FPS expect the shadows (off) and the effects (low). Eventually you have to set your own settings, depending on your hardware, but I recommend to set the effects always to “low” or “very low” to get the best game experience.

I additionally compiled WINE myself with a patch, which helps WINE for better RAM allocation. Also it was a 32-Bit WINE build with WoW64 features. If you also want to enable this (not necessary, but recommend) go can read more here: http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit
This patch was made by the user “ranma42” which is an active user / developer at the MAC League of Legends client (http://www.boompje.net). The patch can be grabbed here: http://uz.sns.it/~ranma42/iLoL/v2/0001-ntdll-Improve-performace-of-heap-allocation-v2.patch
For me the patch brings more FPS stability and also fixed the problem, that the game slows down, while longer playing.

ranma42 announed, that he tries to get the patch to the wine 1.4 upstream.

    1. The above comment supplies a fix for the drop in FPS as the game progresses. This fixed the issue for me. The patch fixing an issue in wine with memory allocation. The resusult of the patch makes wine use slightmy more momory but much more efficient at using the allocated RAM.

  12. I have managed to get the game to work. It is just after character selection before the game actually starts it always crashes. This is the error I am getting

I got the game on the computer by getting off a USB I had been playing the game off. I have adobeair
    d3dx9
    vcrun2010
    wininet

My vieo care driver is 280.13.

Any suggestions how to get the actual game to work.

    i really could fix it…

  14. I Can start the launcher whitout any problem but at the login screen i always get “The server is busy, please try again later” error. i check forums, turned ff my FW checked ie8 from offline mode and unchecked certs from it, still gets the error. Help pls i want to play 😦

    1. Hi,

also in the last time, this issue was posted by many WINE users at the AppDB of WINE, too.

Well, I just don’t get it, why this is happening, but please give me more informations about your:

      1. Linux Distribution
      2. WINE version

Also, please ensure, that wininet is installed (with the help of winetricks: winetricks wininet).
At least, if this is not working, please post the two points, which I mentioned above, and also post the console output for e. g. at nopastebin and set the link here in a comment.

    1. In the error message is the solution to find: WINE isn’t able to find the libmpg123.so.0

So, install with pacman the latest libmpg lib and (if you build WINE on your own) the latest libmpg-dev and (build /) try it again.

      1. I already had mpg123 installed, but installing lib32-mpg123 from the multilib repo fixed that issue…

  17. Just an idea… But how about an ubuntu package that automatically loads and sets up the correct wine setup, and gets listed on the new ubuntu app directory? Perhaps it could be invisible to the user that it’s actually using wine (perhaps best).

  18. If
    code:
    wine “rads_user_kernel.exe” run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

    or
    code:
    wine rads_user_kernel.exe run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

isn’t working for you – try out this:

    code:
    WINEDEBUG=+ntdll wine “rads_user_kernel.exe” run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe

That worked for me under Linux Mint 11 Katya – I’m updating LoL right now!

    Greez

    1. really curious.. yesterday I went to bed because it was almost 5:00 a.m – today I woke up, turned on that linux system and tried out LoL again .. this time “wine rads_user_kernel.exe run lol_launcher $(ls ../projects/lol_launcher/releases/) LoLLauncher.exe ” worked for me and the other one doesn’t ..

  19. Hi!
